Today, April 26th, 2018 the 2nd edition of the Portuguese NEWL exam takes place across the US.
The accreditation of the Portuguese language through the NEWL exams (National Exams in World Languages) will aid in promoting its general awareness in secondary education in addition to facilitating access to Portuguese language studies in higher education throughout the entire nation.
The final number of students enrolled in the Portuguese NEWL exams as of the 24th of April 2018, by school and by state, is that of 215, a number four times greater than that of last year’s, the year of the exam’s inception. This data shows quite promising and significant growth given that the exam is only in its second year.
According to sources by the American Councils for International Education, the states with the greatest enrollment numbers are those of Massachusetts (70) and New Jersey (90), where the education offices of the Camões Institute (Portugal) are located, as well as 16 students enrolled in the state of Florida.
According to the Memorandum of Understanding signed in January 2018 between Camões, Institute (Portugal) and the American Councils for International Education, about 40 students benefited from the annual sum of 2,000 Euros, which was used to aid in fee payment of Portuguese or Portuguese-American students applying for the Portuguese NEWL Exam. The remaining funds will be used to support the participation of Portuguese teachers in the professional development workshops promoted by AC/NEWL, which will take place in September, 2018.
