The Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Teresa Ribeiro , accompanied by the Ambassador of Portugal, Domingos Fezas Vital, payed a visit to the States of Massachusetts and Rhode Island from June 7 to 11 to celebrate the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities. The very intense program included official commemorations of the Portuguese Heritage Day at the State Houses in Boston and Providence, and meetings with the Portuguese and Portuguese-American community in Boston, Fall River, New Bedford, Dartmouth, Smithfield, Cumberland, and Providence. The delegation also met local authorities and elected officials, and discussed further cooperation with Portuguese Studies Centers in the Universities of UMass Dartmouth, MIT and Brown. The Ambassador had the opportunity to sign two protocols of cooperation (see photos) between Camões – Institute for Cooperation and Language, and the Bristol Community College and the UMass Dartmouth aimed at further promoting the Portuguese language and culture trough the exchange of scientific and academic knowledge as well as of teachers and students.
