Military Registration is now done automatically: When a Portuguese citizen turns 18 years old, the information from his/her Birth Certificate and ID Card are automatically transferred to the Ministry of Defense, and therefore, is not necessary to contact the Consulate.
Military registration for 2012 will be conducted for Portuguese citizens born in 1994. Therefore, be aware of the call notices to attend the Day of National Defense. You can view the Call Notice through the following site: http://bit.ly/NcfYwM . Whoever fails to appear or request a waiver, may be penalized.
Portuguese citizens who turn 18 years old in 2012 and reside outside of Portugal for more than 6 months, or have been born and live abroad, and cannot attend the Day of National Defense, should request a waiver through the Consulate of his/her area of residence and provide the following documentation:
Photocopy of his/her Identity Card or “Cartão de Cidadão”;
Photocopy of Passport;
Proof of residency in the USA;
Students should provide proof of their enrollment and school attendance.
